This is the question we asked Nigerians across different channels as part of our latest research into the state of digital banking experiences in Nigeria.

With Africa, one of the fastest-growing digital payments markets in the world, and Nigeria, its leading fintech hub, competition amongst banking apps is fierce, and the pressure on financial institutions to innovate, deliver, and stay ahead of the curve has never been higher.

Consumers’ expectations are growing just as fast. Users of today want more than just a functional app - they want an experience. They seek simplicity, speed, security, personalization, rewards, investment opportunities, and more.

So, the challenge for financial institutions of today is - how do we create a delightful app that also balances functionality, security, and ease of use?

This is the central question we set out to explore in The State of UX in Financial Apps Report Nigeria 2025. In the course of this research, we heard from customers, evaluated the top banking apps in the country, and we engaged with our financial partners. We also brought our own unique perspectives – shaped by over 20 years as the backbone of digital payments connecting banks, merchants, agents and consumers in Africa. We painted a clear picture of the current state of UX in Nigeria’s banking apps, highlighting where we are now, where we aspire to be, and the constraints along the way. We also paired these findings with global best practices and practical steps to help financial institutions balance innovation, security, and customer delight.

Our goal with this report is simple: to spark deeper, more frequent conversations about user experience in the fintech space.
