IWD Spotlight: Beyond her Desk- How Edith is Inspiring Children and Creating Impact.

At Interswitch, women are creating impact far beyond their corporate roles.

Edith Mukenya, a Legal Counsel at Interswitch East Africa Kenya Limited, is passionate about mentoring, community service, and empowering the next generation through education.

She shares how small acts of service can create meaningful change and why leadership isn’t about a title, it’s about action.

Q: For those who may not know you, can you tell us a little about your role and community initiative?

A: I am a Legal Counsel at Interswitch East Africa Kenya Limited, where I provide legal advisory support, review commercial agreements, and ensure regulatory compliance.

Beyond work, I serve as Treasurer of the Adhoc Committee for Recreational and CSR Activities at the Institute of Certified Secretaries (ICS). Through this platform, I help organize visits to children’s homes and donate food, clothing, and books to support their welfare and education.

Q: What inspired you to give back, and what has been the most challenging part?

A: Education has shaped my journey, so supporting children’s learning is deeply meaningful to me.

The biggest challenge is mobilizing resources and coordinating volunteers, but seeing the positive impact makes it all worthwhile.

Q: Was there a particular moment that made you realise you wanted to create impact beyond your professional role?

A: Yes. During visits to children’s homes, I saw how even small contributions, like books or school supplies, could inspire children and make a real difference. Those experiences strengthened my commitment to giving back.

Q: What does leadership look like without a corporate title?

A: Leadership without a title is about initiative, service, and inspiring others. It’s taking responsibility, organizing people around a shared cause, and creating impact together.

Q: Can you share a story of someone whose life was changed through your initiative?

A: During one visit, a child was overjoyed after receiving books because they loved reading but had limited access to learning materials. Moments like these remind us that small acts can inspire hope and encourage education.

Q: Advice to young women who want to make an impact?

A: Start where you are, with what you have. You don’t need a big platform; consistency, service, and a willingness to act can create meaningful change.

Q: If a young woman feels unsure about her voice or power, what would you say?

A: Her voice matters, and confidence grows with action. I hope the next generation of girls will have greater access to education, opportunities, and supportive environments that allow them to thrive and lead.

Beyond Edith’s desk, she’s inspiring children, supporting education, and showing that small acts of service can create lasting impact. This International Women’s Day, we celebrate women who lead with purpose, both at work and in their communities.
