From Wireframes to Workouts. Ebunoluwa’s Fitness Coach Story

Adaobi Ezirim

At Interswitch, we believe every story has multiple layers: the professional, the personal, and the passions that drive both. In this edition of Switch Stories, we sat down. We had a chat with Ebunoluwa Omolola, a UX designer who spends his days shaping digital experiences and his evenings inspiring, coaching, and motivating others through fitness.

From wireframes on the screen to workouts in the gym, their journey is proof that creativity and discipline can coexist. Let’s dive into how design thinking meets dumbbells and the stories in between.

  • What drew you into UX design in the first place?

What initially drew me into design was the need to find a tech-related field that also complemented my artistic side. UI/UX design felt like the perfect blend of creativity and technology, and stepping into it turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.

  • Can you walk us through a typical day as a UX designer?

On the days I work in the office, I usually wake up around 5:00 AM to get ready. I arrive by 7:00 AM and start my day by checking emails and Microsoft Teams for any pending messages or updates.  I also review my calendar to see upcoming meetings or deadlines. After settling in, I have breakfast and then dive into the day’s tasks.  My work typically involves collaborating with product managers and team members, attending meetings, and actively working on UX and UI designs for my assigned products.  I take a lunch break in the afternoon before wrapping up my work for the day. I usually leave the office in time to get home by around 5:30 PM. Once I’m home, I prepare to go to the gym to unwind and stay active.

  • What do you enjoy most about working in tech and design?

What I enjoy most about working in tech and design is the *flexibility* it often offers, like the option to work remotely or on a hybrid schedule, depending on the company. I also really enjoy the *visual aspect*, there’s something satisfying about seeing your designs come to life and knowing you contributed to creating something both functional and beautiful.

  • How do you keep up with design trends and user needs?

To keep up with design trends, I often explore platforms like Twitter, Pinterest, Dribbble, and even real-life platforms to see what’s currently working out there. I follow various design communities and individual designers on Twitter who regularly share valuable insights and trends.    When it comes to user needs, I pay close attention to everyday experiences, both my own and others, to understand common pain points. I also conduct targeted research to better understand user behavior and identify areas where the product can genuinely improve their experience.

  • How did you get started on your fitness journey?

My fitness journey began from a young age, as I’ve always had a love for fitness, beauty, and strength. But it truly kicked off in my second year of university. I still remember walking into my hostel gym for the first time and struggling to curl a dumbbell. People laughed, and it was honestly a bit discouraging.    Instead of letting that stop me, I decided to commit to improving. I saved up to buy my own set of dumbbells and started training consistently on my own. It wasn’t easy at the start, but I didn’t give up, and that persistence is what shaped the journey I’m still on today. I have also featured as one of the fitness trainers for VerveLife events.

  • What motivated you to become a fitness coach?

What motivated me to become a fitness coach was my genuine desire to help people achieve their goals. I used to train with my friends- Cynthia and Ganiyat, and I naturally found myself guiding and supporting them through their workouts. They noticed how well I explained things and how passionate I was, and they encouraged me to take it more seriously and consider becoming a fitness coach. That encouragement really sparked the motivation to pursue it professionally.

  • What’s your workout style: HIIT, weights, cardio, or a mix?

I’d describe my workout style as a mix, but it leans more toward weightlifting, because honestly, that’s the answer to almost everything. It builds strength, tones the body, boosts confidence, and supports overall fitness. I still incorporate other styles, but lifting is definitely my foundation.

  • What advice would you give to someone trying to balance a demanding job and a fitness lifestyle?

My advice is simple: just try to show up.  Find the days in the week that are less demanding and commit to them; even 3 to 4 days is enough to stay consistent. Fitness doesn’t always mean going to the gym; you can stay active with home workouts, walks, or short routines that fit into your schedule.  The key is being intentional and flexible, doing what you can, when you can, and building the habit over time.  From shaping seamless digital experiences to shaping stronger bodies, Ebunoluwa has shown us how passion can power every part of life. It’s no surprise he has been one of the fitness instructors at VerveLife, Africa’s Biggest Fitness Party, for two years running, bringing the same energy he pours into design to the workout stage. And the good news? You don’t have to just read about his energy and vibe; you can experience it.  VerveLife 8.0 is coming to your city soon, packed with workouts, music, and unforgettable vibes.  Don’t miss the chance to train, dance, and connect with incredible instructors like Ebunoluwa and many more.
